The Houses of Hermes

The Houses of Hermes
The Arch Mage Bonisagus is credited as founding the theory of Hermetic Magic. But truly, Bonisagus theory was made possible from his invention of the ritual known as Parma Magica, along with the help of his first student, an already powerful magic wielder Trianoma. With the protection of the Parma Magica ritual. (A means of greatly strengthening ones magical resistance) Trianoma sought out other Wizards knowing she would prevail should they prove hostile. By bartering the Parma Magica, she learnt the ways of other magic users and in turn taught Bonisagus.

Presently, the Order of Hermes consists of 12 recognized houses. These houses, with the exception of House Ex Miscellanea, are named after their primogenitor, a magi who Trianoma first bartered with. Every house more or less has adopted Hermetic Magical theory, but each also holds their own unique viewpoint of magic, The Gift, and its use.

Bjornaer Magi who concern themselves primarily of nature and beasts. Each member can take the form of at least one animal, their ‘heartbeats.’ A Mystery cult where learning ones ‘heartbeast’ is the outwardest mystery.
Bonisagus A True Lineage, each Magi of the house can trace their lineage of masters back to Bonisagus and Trianoma.
Criamon A secretive house with an obscure philosophy in which magi seek the ‘enigma.’ A Mystery cult. Its members are known for marking their bodies with arcane symbols.
Ex Miscellanea A large, diverse house consisting of magi with varying viewpoints. Oftentimes members of other houses who for their own reasons leave their old house, join the House Ex Miscellanea.
Flambeau House Flambeau can be said to be a gathering of kindred spirits. Its magi are agressive and combative, many but not all specialize in Ignem magic.
Guernicus A True Lineage, its members all descend from Guernicus who believe that for the Order to survive, its rules must strictly be enforced.
Jerbiton The founder Jerbiton was born to a powerful nobleman who learned his magic with the support of his family, thus the members of house Jerbiton tend to concern themselves with mundane affairs, especially as many of its members are born nobility, and to a lesser extent the Church.
Mercere The founder of this House lost his gift after training two apprentices. He stayed in the Order as a ‘redcap’ working as messenger to other Magi. A True Lineage, the house Mercere is composed of many ‘Magi’ who do not possess The Gift. Although members of the Order, only those ‘magi’ with The Gift vote in Tribunal.
Merinita A Mystery Cult, this house is focused on learning of the world of the Fae, Arcadia. Caring little for the politics of the Order, they do rise up united when other magi impinge on the rights of the Fae.
Tremere A proud house of a True Lineage, Tremere stress respect of ones parens and ones superiors. Conservative, strong, and stable, House Tremere see themselves as the backbone of the Order.
Tytalus Strength and knowledge through conflict, House Tytalus seeks to understand and ‘control’ all forms of conflict. This house will be forever stained by its falling prey to demonic influence in the 10th century.
Verditius The founder taught Bonisagus the methods of enchanting items, a Mystery Cult, most young magi of this house have inherited Verditius’s magical flaw.
